FACE LIFTING (neck and facelift)

1. HOW MANY YEARS WILL I LOOK YOUNGER?
This will depend on some factors such as: your chronological age, the age you look and the conditions of your skin. It is not surgically possible to make a 40-year-old face look a 20-year old one. Although it may seem obvious, we should stress this fact because there are certain misleading information given by nonprofessional people which may cause some patients to believe that time clock can be delayed according to their desire.

2. HOW WILL BE THE SCARS? WILL THEY DISAPPEAR?
Plastic Surgery's objective is to treat flaccidity, wrinkles, sulcus, etc. aiming at a facial rejuvenation. The resulting scars are permanent though they may turn almost invisible with time. Before it happens, there are several resources such as make-ups and appropriate hairstyles that help disguising recent scars. Each patient will develop differently concerning scar evolution and, in certain cases, the scars may become practically invisible. All surgeries leave scars. The type of scar will depend on technical (type of suture) and personal (genetic characteristics, being a smoker or non-smoker...) factors. Unfortunately, there are other factors that will interfere in the resulting scar but still we have a series of resources available that will allow us to improve the bad aspect of a scar.

a. Immediate period: it lasts as far as the 30 th day and has a hardly visible aspect. Some cases present discreet reaction to the stitches and to dressing.

b. Mediate period: it lasts from the 30 th day until the 12 th month. During this period, the scar naturally thickens and goes through a change in color, turning darker (from red to brown) but little by little it becomes clearer. This period is the less favorable of the scar evolution and it is what worries the patients the most. As we cannot accelerate the natural scar healing process, we recommend that the patients should not be worried about this since, in a later period, the scar remains will surely diminish.

c. Late period: it lasts from the 12 th to the 18 th month. During this period, the scar becomes clearer and less consistent and acquires its definitive aspect. Any assessment of the final surgery result concerning the scar should be done after this period
.

3. HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS REMAIN?
This is too personal and will vary from patient to patient. It will depend on each patient's demands, on their type of skin, on the type of care they have with their skin, etc. Generally, a revision surgery is not necessary before a 5-10 year period of time. Nevertheless, the surgery does not cease the natural aging process and the speed of this process will also vary from person to person. We have the choice of carrying out some small procedures that have good results if the patient is careful, i.e. takes care of his/her skin and decides to treat all the first aging signs.

4. IS REJUVENATING FACIAL SURGERY (WRINKLES) CONSIDERED A SMALL OR A LARGE SURGERY? ARE THERE ANY RISKS?
This is considered a large surgery because it is full of small and minute details. Rarely do complications occur since, during the pre-op period, the patient is prepared to avoid future intercurrence. But unforeseen events may happen. The risks are the ones inherent to any surgical procedure.

5. WHICH TYPE OF ANESTHESIA IS UTILIZED FOR THIS SURGERY?
Either local or general anesthesia or even an associated one. The anesthetist will decide on which type to be used, depending on each case.

6. HOW LONG DOES SURGERY TAKE?
Around three hours. It will depend on the face area that needs to be treated.

7. HOW LONG DOES THE HOSPITALIZATION PERIOD LAST?
24 hours.

8. ARE DRESSINGS USED?
Yes. Compressing dressings are usually used during the first 48 hours.

9. DO THE EYES REMAIN CLOSED DURING THE POST- OP PERIOD?
No . We only recommend the use of cotton cold wet dressings with saline on the eyes or anything similar. They should be removed at the patient's wish. This helps the post-op edema on the eyes to diminish.

10. DOES THE PATIENT FEEL PAIN DURING THE POST- OP PERIOD?
No. Aesthetic surgeries evolution is generally painless. Rarely is there intercurrence of discreet pain, but we can solve it with regular analgesics.

11. WHEN ARE THE STITCHES REMOVED?
Most of the eyelids stitches are removed after 48-72 hours. The remaining ones (face, neck, scalp) on the 8 th -12 th day.

12. WHEN WILL I BE ABLE TO USE SOME MAKE-UP?
On the eyelids, 7-10 days after the stitches removal. On the face, around the 5 th day. Our nurses will give you more information about it.

13. WHEN WILL I BE ABLE TO WASH AND COMB MY HAIR?
From the 2 nd day on, but carefully. To dry it, you should use a hand hairdryer but at low heat. Dyeing should only be done after the 3 rd week.

14. HOW IS THE POST OP EVOLUTION?
You should not forget that you will go through several phases until a desirable result is achieved. Edemas (swellings), stains of infiltrated blood, hypersensitiveness in some areas, and insensibility in others are very common. But some patients may present these symptoms with less intensity. Your organism will need some time to naturally respond to the surgical trauma. The critical period correspond to the first 15 days. During the first month, the face will still present some edemas (swellings) and you will not be able to see the final results before the second month. The third-fourth month is the ideal period to evaluate the results. Be patient. A certain degree of anxiety is acceptable and some patients even feel emotionally depressed during the first days.

  15. ULTIMATLY, WILL I GET A DEFINITIVE RESULT WITH A SINGLE SURGICAL PROCEDURE?
Generally, yes. Our aim is that the patient achieves the ideal shape in the most natural in aesthetic manner as possible. Some intercurrence may turn necessary a second surgical time. So the result can be better. This rarely happens but when necessary, it is done under local anesthesia, in a comfortable manner.
