RHINOPLASTY ( NOSE SURGERY)

1. DOES RHINOPLASTY LEAVE A SCAR ?
Generally no. In some cases, there may be very little visible scars. Usually, the incisions ( cuts) are made inside the nose or on the internal sulcus and consequently do not leave any apparent stitches marks. In some cases, we leave a tiny scar in the columela and in the lobes of the nose that can hardly be seen.

2. WILL I BE ABLE TO CHOOSE THE SHAPE OF MY FUTURE NOSE?
It depends. The shape of nose will depend on: 1. the skin type; 2. face aesthetics. There is an aesthetic balance between the nose and the face which should be observed by the surgeon in order to maintain a natural and an authentic look. Each case is analyzed in details so as to achieve the best nasal shape as possible according to the natural characteristics of the face. If your choice coincides with type of nose planned and the type of your skin permits, your wish will undoubtedly be considered. If this is not the case, we have at our disposal technical resources which will help us to show you and to convince you about the ideal nose (photos, montages, graphical study of the nose, cast masks, computer simulations, etc.)

3. WILL I BE ABLE TO SEE AN IMMEDIATE FINAL RESULT OF THE NEW SHAPE?
No. There are several post-op stages. During the first stage, (immediately after the cast is removed around the 7 th day), although several aesthetic aspects have been corrected, we notice the appearance of an edema (swelling) which tends to diminish with time. It generally fully disappears around the 6 th month. There may be some patients who will achieve the final result little sooner than that while some others, though more rarely, may achieve it in a period a little longer than 6 months. If the transitory edema persists longer than the expected period of time, this fact does not interfere in the final result.

4. HOW WILL I BREATHE AFTER SURGERY?
You may have some difficulties during the mediate post op period ( a few weeks). This is caused by an edema in the internal part of the nose and by a decrease of the movement of the respiratory valve due to the change of the elasticity of the lobes. With time, it tends to become normal. Breathing problems are generally associated with the septum, which usually undergoes some correction during rhinoplasty and it is done by a specialist.

5. I HAVE A CONSTANT RUNNING NOSE. WILL SURGERY RELIEVE THIS PROBLEM?
Our experience shows that after rhinoplasty, the chronic symptoms generally disappear. However, we cannot guarantee this will happen in all cases. It is relevant to state that the aesthetic surgery of the nose will not cause any damage to respiratory functions .

6. HOW MUCH TIME DOES THE RESULT REMAIN?
The result of rhinoplasty is definitive. The nasal tip tends to fall with the aging process.

7. IS RHINOPLASTY CONSIDERED A SMALL OR A MIDDLE SURGERY? WHICH ARE ITS MOST COMMON COMPLICATIONS?
This is a middle surgery. Rarely do complications occur, once the patients are prepared to avoid intercurrences. However, we are never free of unforeseen events.

8. WHICH TYPE OF ANESTHESIA IS UTILIZED FOR THIS SURGERY?
Either local, general or associated anesthesia can be used. The anesthetist will decide on which type to use depending on the surgeries to be performed and the clinical conditions of the patient. But usually, for this type of surgery we use local anesthesia with intravenous sedation.

9.HOW LONG DOES SURGERY TAKE?
Generally around 60 – 90 minutes. In some cases, this period is longer, depending on the circumstances.

10. how long does hospitalization PERIOD take?
24 hours.

11. IS DRESSING USED? HOW MANY? IS A NASAL PACK USED?
After surgery, the nose is immobilized with a cast or with acquaplast. This dressing stays for 7-8 days and is removed in the office after this period. We use a nasal pack which remains overnight. If septum correction is carried out simultaneously, this period of time can be longer. After removing the cast, we keep a dressing with surgical tape ( micropore) for one week more. After 15 days no immobilization ( dressing) is used.

12.I HEARD THE NOSE BLEEDS DURING THE FIRST DAYS. IS IT TRUE?
There is little bleeding through the nasal pack during the first 48 hours. However, you should not worry about this because we keep a protection dressing below the nostrils in order to prevent the blood from flowing down. This additional dressing can be changed at home as many times as necessary.

13.DOES THE PATIENT FEEL PAIN DURING THE POST OP PERIOD?
Rarely. The aesthetic nose surgery has a painless post op. When an eventual pain occurs, we can solve with analgesics which we prescribe as preventive medication.

14.IS THIS SURGERY DANGEROUS?
Rhinoplasty rarely presents serious complications. This happens maybe because the patient is conveniently prepared for the surgery and we also ponder on the convenience of simultaneously associating rhinoplasty with another surgery. The risks are the ones inherent to any surgical procedures.

15.WHAT IS THE SLEEPING POSITION DURING THE FIRST DAYS?
Always with your head lying down on a thin pillow. Never lie on your side, always with your face looking up.

16.WHEN WILL I BE ABLE TO SUN BATHE?
Direct solar exposure should be avoided in the first 45 days. Even when you walk on the streets you should always use sun block both on the face and the nose.

17.HOW DOES POST OP EVOLUTION TAKE PLACE ?
You should not forget that you will go through several phases until we reach a desirable result. Thus, edemas (swellings), stains of infiltrated blood, and some respiratory difficulty during the first days commonly happen. Some patients may present these symptoms with less intensity. Your body will need some time to naturally respond to the surgical trauma. In the first month, both the nose and some facial areas will present some edemas. In the second month, this edema decreases considerably. But the final result will only start to appear from the 4 th month on, and reaches its ideal shape within 6 months to one year. You should be patient. A certain level of anxiety is expected because of the transitory aspect of the nose. Our team of professionals will be available to assist you during this period.

18.WHEN CAN I RESTART MY PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES?
Do not work out, do not practice any sports or any physical activities which can cause traumatisms on the operated area before 45-60 days. But you can go for some walking or riding an ergo metric bicycle which can be done progressively after the 10 th day. Follow medical orientation.

19.IS THE RESULT OF AESTHETIC NOSE SURGERY COMPENSATORY?
Evidently. Among all the aesthetic surgeries, rhinoplasty is the one which provide the most satisfactory results. Remember what has been said previously: each case is carefully analyzed in the first consultation when you will given all the details explained here. Since both doctor and patient reach a final decision for the surgery, we assure you the result is compensatory. We try to achieve the most discreet scar as possible by utilizing technical and surgical cares.

20.ULTIMATELY WILL I GET A DEFINITIVE RESULT WITH A SINGLE SURGICAL PROCEDURE?
Generally yes. Our aim is that the patient achieves the ideal shape in the most natural in aesthetic manner as possible. Some intercurrences may turn necessary a second surgical time. So the result can be better. This rarely happens but when necessary , it is done under local anesthesia , in a confortable manner.
