1. WHERE ARE THE SCARS LOCATED?
An internal scar can be made (inside the mouth) or with a small incision in the lower area of the chin. The plastic surgeon will decide on which type of scar to be made.
2. WHAT TYPE OF ANESTHESIA IS USED?
If the correction to be made is exclusively that of the chin, we recommend local anesthesia (with or without previous sedation depending on the case). If this surgery is associated with another one, the surgeon will ponder whether to use a local or a general anesthesia.
3. HOW IS THE SILICON PROSTHESIS TO BE INTRODUCED?
Pre-molded prostheses are usually used (there are prostheses of various sizes) and they can be showed to the patient during the pre op consultation.
4. IS SILICON DANGEROUS? DOES IT CAUSE CANCER?
Silicon has been used in its solid form all over the world for over 25 years. Thousands of patients have been operated on for silicon prosthesis and, so far, nothing has been proved scientifically that silicon may cause cancer. It is an inert substance to the organism and remains in the same place where it has been introduced, inside a fiber capsule that the body itself creates during the first days of the post-op period.
Rarely does the organism eliminate the prosthesis. When it happens, generally due to immediate post op problems like infection, traumatism or bleeding, etc., we remove the prosthesis in a rather simple procedure under local anesthesia without any further harm to the patient. A new prosthesis can be introduced later on.
5. DOES THE PATIENT FEEL PAIN DURING THE POST OP PERIOD?
Generally, no. But when there is intercurrence of little pain, we can solve it with regular analgesics
6. HOW IS DRESSING MADE?
We usually use local dressings in order to maintain the prosthesis fixed. Besides, these dressings may work as a protection against traumatisms that may eventually happen during the first days of the post-op period.
7. HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO REST TO RECOVER FROM THE OPERATION?
Depending on the patients` type of activity, it can be only one day. Some cases may require relative special care for 8 to 10 days, but no resting in bed is necessary.
8. WHICH ARE THE PRE OP CARES?
The doctor should be informed of any infected tooth. If this happens, you should schedule an appointment with your dentist to treat this before a mentoplasty.
9. WILL THERE BE ANY CHANGE IN MY COMPLEXION AFTER THIS SURGERY?
There will not be great changes in your complexion. It will only become more harmonious but your personal traits will be maintained.
10. CAN THIS SURGERY BE ASSOCIATED WITH A RHINOPLASTY?
In most cases, the surgeon himself/herself advises the association of these two surgeries aiming at achieving a better aesthetic balance of the face.
11. ULTIMATLY WILL I GET A DEFINITIVE RESULT WITH A SINGLE SURGICAL PROCEDURE?
Generally, yes. Our aim is that the patient achieves the ideal shape in the most natural in aesthetic manner as possible. Some intercurrence may turn necessary a second surgical time. So the result can be better. This rarely happens but when it's necessary, it is done under local anesthesia, in a comfortable manner |
